Who carries the greater pressure: the team chasing history or the team trying to stop it?
That is the question hanging over Saturday’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
For Pirates, the opportunity is clear. They are chasing a fifth consecutive MTN8 title, something no club has ever achieved. They have already made history by becoming the first team to reach five successive finals. Now they have the chance to turn that remarkable run into an unprecedented fifth straight trophy.
There is another milestone within reach too. Pirates currently have 14 MTN8 titles, one behind Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15. Victory on Saturday would see the Buccaneers draw level with their Soweto rivals as the most successful club in the history of the competition.
It is a different kind of pressure when history is no longer something you are chasing from a distance. It is right in front of you.
Pirates know exactly what is waiting for them.
They have won the competition in each of the last four seasons, lifting the trophy in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Their most recent success came against Stellenbosch, when they won the 2025 final 3-0.
And there is something familiar about Saturday’s opponent.

In 2023, Pirates and Sundowns met in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. After 120 minutes without a goal, Pirates prevailed 3-1 on penalties, with Sipho Chaine producing three saves in the shootout.
Chaine remains at Pirates, as do Deon Hotto, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Tapelo Xoki, who all started that final. Evidence Makgopa and Makhehleni Makhaula were also part of the matchday squad.
Much has changed since then, however.
The current Pirates squad is attempting to create its own history, rather than simply repeat what previous generations achieved.
Their journey to this year’s final has been impressive. Pirates defeated Durban City 2-1 in the quarterfinal before producing a commanding semifinal performance against Sekhukhune United. They won the first leg 1-0 and followed it with a 3-0 victory in the return leg, progressing 4-0 on aggregate.
Sundowns have taken a more dramatic route.
They defeated Polokwane City 3-2 in the quarterfinal before losing 1-0 to Golden Arrows in the first leg of their semifinal. They responded with a 3-2 victory in the second leg to secure their place in the final.
For Sundowns, the motivation is equally significant.
They have won the MTN8 four times, but their last triumph came in 2021. They now have an opportunity to prevent Pirates from reaching five consecutive titles while adding another piece of silverware to their own history.
At Pirates’ media day at Rand Stadium on Monday, the atmosphere offered little indication of a team overwhelmed by the occasion.
The session itself was relatively short, but there was good energy around the training ground. The drills were quick and intense, yet the players appeared to be enjoying themselves. The technical team were involved throughout, encouraging the players and keeping the intensity high.

There were also some welcome sights for Pirates supporters, with players working their way back from injury training alongside the group.
Sihle Nduli was back on the field as he continues with his rehabilitation. He still has a couple of weeks to spend with the medical department, but his return to training is another step forward.
Evidence Makgopa and Kabelo Dlamini were also among the players working with the team.
Then there was Tapelo Xoki.
After spending a full year out, the defender spoke about the challenge of returning from a serious injury and the importance of getting the mind to trust the body again. He also spoke about the support he has received from his teammates, both physically and psychologically.
That support was visible during the session.
At one point, players celebrated goalkeeper Siyabonga Dladla as he made saves. It was a small moment, but it said plenty about the mood within the group. The final may be a high pressure occasion, but the players are still finding enjoyment in the work.
For Xoki, the motivation is straightforward. Everyone wants to be ready for selection. Everyone wants to contribute. And everyone wants to make the supporters happy.
The Bafana Bafana internationals have now returned from international duty, bringing the squad closer to full preparation for Saturday. Sundowns will have their own media day tomorrow, Wednesday, before attention turns fully towards the final.
For Pirates, the message is simple: defend the title, embrace the pressure and chase history.
For Sundowns, it is about stopping them. That is what makes this final so intriguing.
One team is four victories away from having an unprecedented fifth consecutive title already behind it. The other stands between them and history. Two champions. One trophy. On Saturday in Durban, history gets another chapter.
