Huli Ndlovu on luxury, identity, and living life on her own terms

Huli Ndlovu is a South African-born luxury personal shopper, travel curator, and content creator based in London. Through her three platforms, she has built a career around helping people access the finer things in life, from sourcing rare luxury pieces to curating travel experiences across Europe. We sat down with her to talk about where she comes from, what luxury really means, and how she has carved out her own space in a world that wasn’t always designed with her in mind.

Huli grew up in a close-knit community where the focus was on family, shared values, and hard work rather than material things. Her parents gave her something that has stayed with her to this day: discipline, respect, and a strong sense of self.

“It wasn’t an environment defined by material wealth, but by connection, intention, and quiet pride. These values continue to guide how I move through every space today.”

Luxury, back then, was about presentation. It was about looking put together and taking pride in your appearance. Her mother made sure of that. Alongside family and community, magazines and television also played a role in shaping her sense of style and what was possible. “My belief is that luxury begins with how you present yourself, long before it becomes about what you can afford.”

Huli first visited London on a work trip. It stayed with her. Nearly six years later, she returned, this time following a relationship that led to marriage and a permanent move. After more than a decade in corporate South Africa, she was also ready for a change.

Starting over in a new city was not easy. There were moments of feeling out of place, even invisible. But she found something useful in that. “That invisibility also came with freedom. It gave me a blank canvas, the space to redefine myself on my own terms, without expectation or scrutiny.” She leaned on her outgoing personality, connected with the South African community in London, and slowly built her circle through shared interests. London, she learned, rewards those who figure out its rhythm. “I had to come to terms with the reality that life doesn’t pause for you. No one is coming to save you. You have to build your own sense of stability and belonging.”

One of the perks of living in London is how easy it is to travel around Europe. With short flights and good rail connections, cities like Paris and Milan are very accessible. Huli says return flights can cost under R1,500 if you plan ahead and book early.

She has made exploring the continent a priority. Italy is her favourite country in Europe, with each city offering something different. Paris holds a special place for fashion and energy. She also sees luxury differently depending on which city she is in. Paris is coded. It’s about discretion and lineage. Milan is deliberate. There’s structure and pride in craftsmanship. London is interpretive. It breaks rules. Each city reshapes your understanding of what luxury can be.”

Working in the luxury world looks effortless from the outside. The reality is different. As a luxury personal shopper, Huli manages client relationships, tracks down hard-to-find pieces, and handles a lot behind the scenes. “It may look glamorous on the surface, but there’s a lot of work that goes into managing relationships, handling expectations, and sometimes putting out fires in real time.”

Her own understanding of luxury has also shifted over the years. “True luxury is freedom. The freedom of time, choice, and access. I’ve come to value good health and control over my time above anything else. Those are the real markers of luxury for me.” She is also very clear on the difference between genuine luxury and simply showing off. “Authentic luxury doesn’t seek attention or approval. It simply exists. It’s intentional, self-assured, and deeply personal. It doesn’t need to announce itself.”

For anyone new to the luxury market, her advice is to start with self-knowledge. “Understand your own personal taste before being influenced by trends or social media. Luxury comes with a significant investment, so be intentional. True luxury is about discernment, not just visibility.”

Huli describes her personal style in three words: refined, vibrant, and evolving. She dresses based on how she feels, not which labels are popular. That same groundedness shows up in how she carries herself in exclusive spaces as a Black South African woman. “I’ve never felt the need to prove that I belong. I do, and that’s enough. If not me, then who should be there?”

Representation in the luxury world matters to her, not just as a talking point but as something she feels personally. Seeing more Black women in these spaces, she says, changes what feels possible for those watching. “That access is possible. That you don’t have to abandon who you are to step into new spaces.”

Huli’s work spans three platforms. Through hn_luxshopper, she sources and secures luxury pieces for clients. Through GirlwithzestTravel, she curates travel experiences. And through her personal platform Hulindlovu, she shares content built around lifestyle, access, and global perspective. She is careful about the brands she works with, only partnering with those that genuinely fit her life. Wine and skincare are natural areas of interest. Anything that feels forced is a no. Her view of long-term success is not about staying trendy. It’s about building something that lasts. “It’s about building something that transcends trends, whether in business, influence, or impact. And creating a life that allows for evolution.”For all the travel and access, Huli stays connected to where she comes from. Her family and close circle keep her grounded. The values she was raised with, discipline, humility, and intention, go with her everywhere.

When asked what she hopes people will say about her one day, she is straightforward. “That I had the courage to be fully myself. That I lived a life that was authentically my own. That I moved with intention, stayed true to my values, and defined my path on my own terms.”
