Gert-Johan Coetzee Looks to the Past to Imagine the Future with ‘Reflections’, His Autumn/Winter 2027 Collection

Inspired by childhood memories, the complexity of identity and the quiet beauty of nature, the South African designer presents a collection that finds extraordinary expression in the space between who we were and who we are becoming.

There is something profoundly personal about looking at your own reflection. It is an encounter with the familiar, but also an invitation to consider everything that exists beneath the surface. For South African designer Gert-Johan Coetzee, this idea becomes the starting point for Reflections, his Autumn/Winter 2027 collection, unveiled at South African Fashion Week.

Rooted in memories of his childhood on a farm, the collection takes its inspiration from a seemingly ordinary place: a quiet pond where a young Coetzee would spend time observing the movement of water, the changing light and the world reflected back at him. Long before the international recognition, the runway presentations and the demands of building a luxury fashion house, there was simply a boy, his imagination and a landscape that would unknowingly shape his creative language.

Years later, that memory has found its way into a collection that is as much about personal evolution as it is about the possibilities of design.

But Reflections is not simply an exercise in nostalgia. It asks a more compelling question: what happens when the person we have worked so hard to become encounters the person we once were?

For Coetzee, water offers an interesting metaphor. Its surface captures an image, but its depths tell another story. It is this tension between appearance and reality that informs the collection, exploring the relationship between public identity and private experience, strength and vulnerability, structure and fluidity.

“This collection returns to the simplicity of where my imagination first took shape,” says Coetzee. “Water mirrors what sits on the surface, but beneath it lies infinite depth. With Reflections, we translate that duality into garment design, balancing strength with vulnerability, and bold structural tailoring with organic, flowing movement.”

On the runway, this philosophy takes shape through an interplay of textures, silhouettes and colour. Aquatic cobalt and teal introduce the visual language of water, gradually giving way to earthy greens, rust tones and graphic houndstooth. The palette moves between the organic and the architectural, creating a collection that feels grounded in nature while remaining distinctly contemporary.

Liquid-like textiles introduce movement, while sculptural forms bring a sense of dimension and drama. High-texture outerwear, scale-like petal appliqués, floor-length fringe and pom-pom jackets create an expressive surface language. Hand-embroidered details add another layer of craftsmanship, reinforcing the collection’s emphasis on texture and the relationship between the natural world and the designer’s imagination.

There is a deliberate contrast throughout. Fluidity meets precision. Softness is interrupted by structure. Romanticism finds its counterpart in bold tailoring. Rather than choosing between these opposing qualities, Coetzee allows them to coexist, reflecting the contradictions that make up individual identity.

It is also a reminder of the designer’s ability to translate an idea into a distinct visual proposition. In Reflections, the clothes are not simply interpretations of a theme; they become the medium through which that theme is explored.

A new chapter in bridal couture

Beyond the collection’s conceptual and aesthetic direction, the South African Fashion Week presentation marked another significant development for the fashion house: the introduction of a dedicated range of couture-inspired bridal gowns.

Anchored by a series of romantic ballgowns, the bridal offering signals an expansion into the luxury wedding market, bringing Coetzee’s signature approach to embellishment, silhouette and occasion dressing into a more intimate and emotionally significant category of fashion.

Bridal design is a natural extension of a creative language that has long embraced femininity, drama and the art of making an entrance. Yet the significance of this new offering lies in the opportunity to bring couture sensibilities to one of fashion’s most personal experiences: the wedding day.

“Introducing our dedicated bridal line alongside this collection feels like a natural evolution, bringing couture artistry and emotional depth into the bridal space,” Coetzee explains.

It is an important moment for the fashion house, demonstrating an ambition to extend its creative footprint while building on the craftsmanship and distinctive aesthetic that have shaped its identity.

The art of becoming

What makes Reflections particularly compelling is its consideration of the passage of time. Fashion is often preoccupied with what comes next: the next season, the next silhouette, the next statement. Coetzee, however, takes a different route, looking backwards to better understand the present.

The collection suggests that evolution does not necessarily require abandoning the people we once were. Sometimes, the most meaningful creative discoveries come from revisiting the places, experiences and ideas that first shaped us.

For a designer whose work now occupies the expansive world of luxury fashion, the inspiration is refreshingly intimate. A childhood pond becomes a study in identity. A memory becomes a design language. And a reflection becomes an opportunity to reconsider everything that lies beneath the surface.

With Reflections, Gert-Johan Coetzee presents a collection that looks beyond the immediate spectacle of the runway. It is an exploration of memory, craftsmanship and transformation, and a reminder that the most interesting expression of who we are may be found in understanding where we began.
