Following the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie alongside a stellar cast that includes Ryan Gosling and Issa Rae, the latest trend that has taken the world by storm is the ‘Barbiecore’ aesthetic.
‘Barbiecore’ is an aesthetic inspired by the Mattel fashion doll Barbie™, and it’s all about bright and bold pink and it has been around for a few years. Nicki Minaj is the most prominent celebrity associated with the ‘Barbiecore’ aesthetic, known for her love of the colour pink and fans being dubbed ‘Barbz’. Following Margot Robbie’s press tour looks, which were recreations of several Barbie doll outfits and the anticipation of the movie premiere, the aesthetic has been everywhere. The House of Chanel also collaborated with Barbie, creating a few looks for the blonde bombshell. Five silhouettes that Virginie Viard has imagined will be seen on screen and five featured silhouettes – three suits, a ski suit, and a dress – were chosen to highlight the Barbie character as she moves through her journey in the film.
The Barbiecore aesthetic has found its way to the South African space. The Barbie™ movie premiere in South Africa was a fabulous pink frenzy, as South African public figures dressed up to celebrate the movie’s official release. Faith Nkesti wore a custom design from Masango by Siphoesihle and looked like a real-life Barbie™ girl. Model Lethabo Shai looked terrific in a pale pink mini dress and Fuschia square-toe platform heels. Kim Jayde replicated a Moschino Barbie look in a pink custom leather look from Haku and paired it with limited edition Barbie shoes.
