Nothing is as exciting as award shows; the fashion, the terrific performances, the drama (they are never without) and of course the wins. Last night the BET Awards in Los Angeles, hosted by award-winning Actress Taraji P Henson, saw a string of celebrated names in black entertainment gathered to celebrate music, culture and the arts. Among the celebrated was music exec, Diddy, who showed up at the awards with his sons Quincy, Justin and Christian as well his gorgeous mother, Mama Combs. Diddy was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award which was presented by Baby Face and the genius – Kanye West.
Diddy thanked everyone including his ex girlfriend Mrs Cassie Fine while his current boo Caresha ‘Yung Miami” was there cheerleading with a sign “Go Papi” and no mention. As the book goes, this is subtle evidence that men will indeed embarrass you. Mr Love also donated $2 million to Howard University and Jackson State before hitting the stage with his Bad Boy Records friends – Mary J Blige, Faith Evans, Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes and more.
Speaking of Kanye, whose tribute to Diddy was beautiful and inspiring, he was struggling to breathe under that full face mask.
Kirk Franklin and Maverick City brought the house down with their spirit-filled gospel performance and Kirk did not hesitate to bust a move! He is a great dancer and he looked impeccable in a red suit.
Janelle Monae, Taraji P Henson and Jazmine Sullivan among others spoke out against the new passed law against abortions. Sullivan pleaded with men to take a stand and put pressure on policy makers to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade. Lizzo pledged $1 million to planned parenthood after giving a riveting performance in a gold number.
Some of the most iconic performances were from Chloe – who not only looked ravishing but sounded great too. The young lady is not here to play! Brandy surprised everyone when she joined Jack Harlow for a performance of one of his song Fast Lane. The Vocal Bible spit bars on the stage and killed the choreography. Latto, who also won Best Newcomer performed her song featuring Mariah Carey and as completely unexpected, she whistled her way to the stage the only way a GOAT does.
Giveon sounded horrible and went on to say he was sabotaged. One great dancer by the name of Omarion or Olemon as the streets would now know him said earlier that “singers have malfunctions…” I suppose it was one of those. We still like his music though.
