MALAIKA GRAY: A NEW VOICE CONNECTING AFRICA THROUGH MUSIC

With her debut single, My Fever, featuring Tanzanian music star Marioo, the Australian born, South African-raised singer introduces a sound shaped by heritage, contemporary R&B and Bongo Flava, while building her musical foundation at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

There is something compelling about an artist whose identity is shaped by more than one place. For Malaika Gray, music exists at the intersection of cultures, experiences and influences that stretch from Tanzania to South Africa and now Boston, where she is studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. It is a journey that informs not only how she sees the world, but also the sound she is beginning to introduce to it.

With the release of her debut single, My Fever, featuring acclaimed Tanzanian singer Marioo, Malaika makes her first official statement as a recording artist. Sensual, melodic and rooted in the meeting point between Afrobeats, Bongo Flava and R&B, the record offers an introduction to a young artist finding her voice while drawing from the cultural richness of her background.

Born in Australia to a Tanzanian mother and raised in South Africa, Malaika’s relationship with music has been shaped by two distinct yet interconnected musical landscapes. Her Tanzanian roots connect her to the rhythms and storytelling traditions of East African music, while growing up in South Africa exposed her to a diverse contemporary soundscape. Rather than choosing between these influences, she is embracing the space where they meet.

That duality is particularly evident in My Fever. Built around an intimate, romantic sensibility, the single combines the rhythmic character of Bongo Flava with the smoothness of R&B, creating a record that prioritises feeling as much as melody. It is a confident introduction that leans into sensuality without losing its musical identity.

The collaboration with Marioo adds another dimension to the release. One of Tanzania’s recognised contemporary music voices, Marioo brings an established East African presence to a record that also introduces a new generation of talent. Their collaboration is a meeting of musical perspectives, bringing together an emerging artist and an established name through a sound that feels at home across borders.

“My Fever is a very special record for me because it introduces people to who I am as an artist. I wanted to create something beautiful, sensual and honest — a song that makes people feel something. Growing up in South Africa while carrying my Tanzanian roots has shaped how I experience music, and I love that this record brings those influences together. This is the beginning of a journey I have been looking forward to sharing with the world,” says Malaika.

For Malaika, however, the journey extends beyond a debut release. She is currently studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, an institution internationally recognised for its contribution to contemporary music education and the development of musicians, performers and creative talent. Her academic experience adds another layer to her artistic development, allowing her to explore musicianship, creativity and performance while working towards defining her own musical identity.

It is an interesting foundation for an artist entering an industry that is increasingly global, where African music is finding audiences across continents and collaborations are creating new connections between markets. Malaika’s story reflects this movement, but her ambition is not simply to participate in it. She is beginning to establish the sound and perspective that she wants to contribute to it.

“Working with Malaika on My Fever was a beautiful experience. There is something special about a record that allows you to connect with the feeling of the music, and this song has that quality. I am excited for people to hear what we have created together and to see Malaika introduce herself to the world through this record,” says Marioo.

Distributed through Africori/Warner Music, the single also marks an important first step in positioning Malaika’s music for audiences beyond her immediate cultural markets. With connections to both South and East Africa, and an international education shaping her development, she enters the industry with a perspective that is reflective of a generation increasingly comfortable moving between cultures while remaining connected to its roots.

For South African audiences, there is a particular point of connection in Malaika’s story. She is an artist with a South African upbringing and Tanzanian heritage, introducing a sound that draws from East African musical influences while embracing the fluidity of contemporary R&B and Afrobeats. It is a combination that gives her introduction a distinct identity.

Every artist has a beginning, but the most interesting beginnings often offer a glimpse of what is still to come. With My Fever, Malaika Gray opens the door to her musical world. It is an introduction shaped by heritage, education, collaboration and an evident appreciation for the emotional language of music.

Her journey is only beginning, but she has already established the foundation of a sound that is unafraid to cross borders.

Malaika Gray’s debut single, My Fever, featuring Marioo, was released on 30 October 2026 and is distributed through Africori/Warner Music.
