What Happened This Week!

The week started on a high with Mamelodi Sundowns beating Egyptian rivals Al Alhy by five goals. The Yellow Nation (as their supporters are known) filled the stadium as the leading football team in South Africa kept the goals coming. The teams’ captain Themba Zwane scored the second goal following Marcello Allende’s goal in the third minute, as you would imagine, Peter Shalulile would score two of the team’s goals while Teboho Mokoena may have scored the most beautiful goal of the match. It was delightful seeing Percy Tau in his usual top form, even scoring a goal against his former team with the match ending with a 5-2.

That was not the end of it, on Tuesday evening, they took on MaMkhize’s Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld where former Mamelodi Sundowns player Ricardo Nascimento scored an own goal. Defender  Mothobi Mvala, Peter Shalulile, Cassius Mailula were the Brazilian goalscorers while Lantshene Phalene scored one for Royal AM. The team introduced sixteen year-old Siyabonga Mabena who made his PSL debut that evening. The grade 10 student has been likened to Gift Leremi by his coach Rulani Mokwena. The team is currently in Sudan to face off with Al Hilal in the highly contested CAF competition. Their last encounter with Al Hilal saw the two teams draw.

It has been an eventful week packed with a variety of emotions. From dealing with tragic loss to witnessing unforgettable red carpet moments and even some sports wins, there has indeed been plenty to  reflect on.

Here’s a roundup of the week’s local and global top stories.

RIP Costa Titch

This week started on a very sombre note as fans mourned the loss of musician and dancer Costa Tsobanoglou, popularly known as Costa Titch. The Nkalakatha hitmaker, who was only 28 years old, collapsed on stage during his performance at the Ultra music festival at the Nasrec Expo Centre last Saturday. In a statement released by the family, they expressed their deep pain from losing their son. Tributes continue to pour in from friends and supporters. His sudden passing follows just over a month of rapper AKA’s tragic assisination in Durban. The two had collaborated on music together with the late Riky Rick. May their souls rest in peace.

Mzansi loses Gloria Bosman

Just as fans were still coming to terms with the tragic passing of Costa Titch, there was news of more loss. On Tuesday the 14th of March, Jazz musician and composer Gloria Bosman passed away at the age of 50 after a short illness. With a career spanning more than two decades, Bosman has been lauded for her contribution to jazz and South Africa’s music industry at large.

The Soweto-born songstress will be remembered for her versatility, authenticity as well as her ability to effortlessly leave her heart on the stage with each performance.

The Oscars 2023

Further afield, the 95th Academy Awards (Oscars 2023) were held on the 12th of March in Los Angeles. The event honoured films released in 2022 and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ led the ceremony with a total of eleven nominations and seven wins. The much-loved ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Wakanda Forever’ also made it onto the list of winners.

With the event being a glorious occasion and one of Hollywood’s biggest nights, stars truly showed up and showed off on the red carpet. Our  favourite looks include Thuso Mbedu who wore an elegant striped Dior Couture evening dress,  Rihanna who wore a black mermaid dress that flaunted her baby bump as well as Usher who kept it classy in a white suit.
