Manti Mekoa, just like our December cover star Rulani Mokwena (https://nounouche.online/rhulani-mokwena-changing-the-face-of-football/), comes from a football family that inspired him to pursue a career this sporting code. His uncles played the game, even though they did not play professionally, they heavily influenced his decision to “break the ice” as he puts it.
Some of Manti’s highlights include playing for Orlando Pirates and reaching three cup finals with the club.
A style maven, Manti believes in grabbing opportunities when given and fully going the mile.”Football is a short career and I must make the most of it, grab the opportunity when it is given to showcase my talent…”
He has played for various teams in the Premier Soccer League and they have all contributed to his growth and success. He does admit to having had a much better time at Chippa United, “I enjoyed my football there.”
Some of his favorite players include Andile Jali and Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns. “I feel like Mshishi (Zwane) doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He has been very consistent for the past 6/7 years and has improved immensely over the years, especially his goal ratio. He now scores more, something he lacked before in his game. A top professional with a top personality.”
Speaking of Jali, “AJ has won almost everything in South Africa, his style of play is simple, he doesn’t complicate things and he perfects that position well. I love how he reads the game and how he anticipates it. He is a modern playmaker and a class act.”
He likes Sergio Busquests just because he makes football look easy and uncomplicated. “Just like AJ, Sergio plays football the way it should be played, simple” he says.
Manti has been lauded for his skills on the pitch but also loved for his fashion sense and good looks. He works out at least four times a week and plays indoor soccer three times a week. He is also a CrossFit junkie that loves performing more cardio.
On his love for fashion, Manti finds inspiration from people around him, his uncle and his friends love looking good. He also grew up admiring David Beckham for his style versatility and how he looks good in even the most basic piece of clothing. He also likes Memphis Depay, Karim Benzema and Jules Kounde; he regards them as his style icons.
You must look good, smell good and feel good…Manti says he doesn’t have a signature scent but everything depends on his mood. “The weather, my mood, cravings and occasions have an influence on the scent of the day. It is never just that one scent.”
When not working, he enjoys a good meal and some of his favorite spots include Mezepoli in Melrose Arch as well as Pablo House in Melville. A self-proclaimed foodie, he is also very mindful of what he puts in his body. “I am not on a diet but I always watch what I eat because 60% of how your body is is what you eat and not what you do at the gym. I have also had to cut down on my sugar intake.”
He also enjoys reading. Manti spends a lot of money on clothes and fragrances, that’s his weakness.
