If you haven’t already been indoctrinated into the world of Korean series and you’re looking for fashion inspiration and a good time, these 5 shows will open up a new world of entertainment for you. You’re also at the right place if you are an avid Korean Drama (K-Drama) watcher but need a visual mood board for your future outfits! I’ve chosen 5 K-dramas that are available on Netflix South Africa so that you don’t have to struggle with unsolicited pop-ups asking you if you’re free for tonight — you’re welcome.
- Crash Landing on You (2019)
This is a classic romantic Korean drama with an onscreen couple falling in love in real-life, getting married and having a baby! It’s no wonder the chemistry between Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin) and Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) is palpable in all 16 episodes. With Se-ri serving look after look, even after she accidentally crosses the North Korean border and finds herself in a bit of a sticky situation considering she’s a South Korean heiress to a conglomerate. She’s saved by a handsome North Korean army captain and experiences life on the other side of what was once one nation. Throughout the series, you won’t only be excited by the love story, the drama and the twists but by the ensembles put together by the elite in South Korea and the ordinary folk in North Korea.
- Vincenzo (2021)
This is a dark comedy, crime and action series with a little bit of amorous tension. Song Joong-ki plays a Korean born, Italian raised lawyer and consigliere for the Italian mafia known as Vincenzo. Vincenzo isn’t the typical K-Drama male lead because he’s not above doing bad things for a selfish cause but he still supports the underdogs. That’s how he meets the eccentric attorney, Hong Cha-young played by Jeon Yeo-bin. This is a drama set in the workplace so the outfits by Vincenzo and Cha-young present great examples on how to look stylish at work. There’s a lot of money in this show and it definitely comes through in the sets, the quality of the production and the attire.
- The Fabulous (2022)
This show follows four friends and their fabulous lives in Seoul. The series is set within the fashion industry so it’s no surprise that the clothing throughout is to die for! However, this wouldn’t be a K-Drama without a little bit of love amongst the glamour. The romantic interests are: Ji Woo-min (Choi Min-ho), a freelance photographer and retoucher and Pyo Ji-eun (Chae Soo-bin), a public relations manager for a luxury brand living her best and most chaotic life. As Woo-min and Ji-eun do the forbidden and blur the line between friendship, lovers and exes, you can watch them navigate the intense fashion industry in what should be considered one of the fashion capitals of the world, Seoul, This drama offers a fresh and tantalising storyline with unique and trendy looks to boot!
- The World of the Married (2020)
This is the K-Drama that set South African Twitter on fire when Lee Tae-oh (Park Hae-joon) shocked us with how he shamelessly cheated on his wife and the mother of his child, Ji Sun-woo (Kim Hae-ee) with the young and equally brazen Yeo Da-kyung (Han So-hee). This drama is so scandalous and is elevated by the incredible winter outfits dawned by the wife, the cheater and the mistress — once you’ve watched this highly acclaimed series, let’s talk about the coats in the comments below!
- Itaewon Class (2020)
Itaweon is the most culturally diverse neighbourhood in South Korea because it is home to many international students, multicultural restaurants and tourist-friendly clubs and bars. This series of an ex-con making his way up in the restaurant business, despite the best efforts of the elite, is set in this hotspot in Seoul and is one of the most progressive K-Dramas to date. Park Sae-ro-yi, played by Park Seo-joon, and Jo Yi-seo, played by Kim Da-mi, join forces to make their bar restaurant the most popular one of its kind in Itaewon, going up against an established and powerful brand. As they struggle towards succeeding in a cut-throat industry, the characters showcase stylish outfits, from the main characters to the passerby, you’ll be inspired to make unconventional pairs for a night out!
