Things To Learn From DJ Maphorisa

Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, popularly known as DJ Maphorisa, is undoubtedly a musical genius. His ability to constantly re-invent his sound throughout the years while staying true to himself has contributed to the growth of his craft and made him a household name.

Today, if one were to list the biggest names in Mzansi’s musical landscape, the absence of the name ‘Maphorisa’ would most likely render that list incomplete. Through his skill and illustrious music career, the talented record producer, rapper and DJ continues to inspire many in Africa and beyond. He recently staged The Scorpion Kings concert in Pretoria alongside Kabza De Small, it was nothing short of amazing and saw the hottest Amapiano artists set the stage on fire.

These are just 5 lessons we can learn from him.

  1. Turn your passion into profit

Growing up in Soshanguve, Maphorisa’s musical passion developed from a young age. The star grew up in an environment that exposed him to different kinds of music. He has often relayed the story of how his mother would always play gospel music and how his uncle was talented at playing multiple instruments. This exposure to musical influences fueled his passion for music into a profitable business.

  1. Don’t limit yourself

When it comes to the business of not limiting oneself, Maphorisa seemingly has it all figured out. The Amapiano pioneer has not limited himself and his exceptional work to the confines of our borders and shores. Instead, he has worked on various big projects with many international acts. These include the co-production of Drake’s 2016 hit ‘One Dance’. He has also worked very closely with African icons such as WizKid, Runtown and Major Lazer. He has also produced noteworthy house and Afro-pop songs, some with outfit Uhuru and Mafikizolo.

  1. Be open to learning

From when he was still a member of the musical group Uhuru where he contributed to the production of bangers like Y-Tjukutja and Mafikizolo’s Khona, Maphorisa has never been shy to learn from the best in the business. He has managed to hone his craft through following guidance from some of Mzansi’s biggest names including Black Coffee and the legendary Oskido.

  1. Seek to empower others

The Amapiano producer has mentored various artists, working with them from their early industry days until they’re established.

He has also been seen multiple times spotting talent on social media and giving youngsters a chance. For example, he spotted upcoming Amapiano sensation Bob Mabena (not the late radio legend) through a video on social media. Mabena has since gone on to work alongside various musicians including Kabza De Small, Tyler ICU and Busta 929.

  1. Have an element of surprise

While he is known for the magical touch he adds to every song he graces, Maphorisa has always sought to do more than he is known for. Just when fans think they know him, he brings out an element of surprise. In his 2021 amapiano hit ‘Izolo’, Maphorisa displays the sickest bars and lyrical flow – a pleasant surprise to all who never imagined him as the type to pick up a microphone and rap.
