From Dreamer to Game-Changer: Tyla’s Journey to International Success

Tyla is a South African singer and songwriter who has taken the global music world by storm with her unique blend of pop and the South African music genre, Amapiano. Born and raised in Johannesburg, Tyla signed with Epic Records after the success of her debut single ‘Getting Late’ featuring Kooldrink, which gained her popularity in South Africa. It wasn’t until the release of her hit single ‘Water’ that she gained international stardom.

She rose to international fame with her hit single ‘Water’ in 2023, which reached the top ten in sixteen countries. ‘Water’ is also the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. The massive success of the single resulted in Tyla winning the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024. Not only was the Grammy Tyla’s first award, but it also made her the youngest African to win a Grammy award, and she continues to dominate the music charts and award nominations.

Her self-titled debut album, released in 2024, received critical acclaim with hits like ‘Jump’, ‘Truth or Dare’, and ‘ART’. Her debut album entered the top 25 charts in six countries, including the US. And Tyla is just getting started.

Adding to her impressive list of accomplishments, Tyla has received more award nominations, including 4 nominations for the 2024 BET Awards. Remarkably, the number of her nominations ties her with music icon Beyonce’s nominations, competing in categories like Best Female R&B/ Pop Artist and Viewers Choice Award. Not only does Tyla’s success solidify her status as a rising international superstar, but her success has shined a spotlight on Amapiano. Her performances have resulted in the world taking more notice of the rich talent and diverse sound emerging from South Africa and all over Africa.

With her debut album receiving critical acclaim and tireless efforts to perform on international stages, Tyla is redefining what it means to be a pop star and paving the way for other African artists to shine on the world stage.
