Tebogo Motebejane: Pioneering Sports Journalism and Empowering Future Storytellers

In the male-dominated world of sports journalism, Tebogo Motebejane is not only breaking barriers but also setting new standards. As a young, self-taught sports journalist and analyst, she’s passionate about changing the narrative around women in sports media. Tebogo’s journey is one of resilience, creativity, and determination. She has not only carved out a name for herself in the industry but also founded Precious Sports Expressions, a mentorship programme dedicated to empowering aspiring sports writers and fostering a love for sports journalism.

Unlike many in her field, Tebogo didn’t take the conventional route of a formal journalism qualification. In 2020, during the global lockdown, she embraced the opportunity to learn new skills. Already an avid sports fan, particularly of football, she began experimenting with writing by setting up a WordPress blog. “It all started with a desire to write about what I loved most—sports,” she shares. Soon, her online posts attracted attention, and she was accepted into a sports journalism learnership program. From there, she began to feature on radio sports shows, offering in-depth analysis and tactical insights. This experience further cemented her passion and talent for sports journalism.

Navigating the sports journalism landscape as a young woman hasn’t been without challenges. Tebogo recalls struggling with imposter syndrome early in her career, feeling out of place in an industry dominated by men. “I felt like I was constantly being watched and judged, which was intimidating,” she admits. Through resilience and strategic thinking, however, she overcame these feelings. Now, she confidently engages with other sports journalists, has built a strong network, and feels at ease in her role.

Among the many events Tebogo has covered, the Soweto Derby during the 2022-23 season stands out as her most memorable experience. As a fan-turned-journalist, the event gave her a new perspective on the immense impact and multi-dimensional storytelling required for such an iconic game. “The Derby isn’t just about football; it’s a cultural event with so many layers, from fan engagement to financial implications,” she notes. This experience taught her the importance of viewing sports events from various angles, an approach she’s incorporated into her writing.

Reflecting on the transformation of sports journalism in South Africa, Tebogo highlights the shift from print to digital media. “Growing up, we relied on magazines and newspapers like *Kick-Off* and *Soccer Laduma*, but now, digital platforms allow fans to access sports news instantly,” she explains. This evolution excites her, as it has opened up opportunities for emerging voices. Tebogo aims to be part of the movement shaping the future of sports journalism digitally, hoping to one day establish her own sports publication.

Tebogo’s journey inspired her to establish Precious Sports Expressions, initially launched as Football Expressions. Realising her passion extended beyond football, she rebranded the blog to cover multiple sports, infusing her educational background into the initiative. Tebogo recently graduated as a teacher and decided to merge her love for sports with her educational expertise, creating a mentorship programme within Precious Sports Expressions. “The goal is to nurture the next generation of sports storytellers,” she says. The program helps aspiring writers develop their skills, providing them a stepping stone into the industry.

The mentorship programme is a key component of Precious Sports Expressions, designed to guide individuals passionate about sports journalism. Open to anyone eager to learn, the programme covers various aspects of sports journalism, from writing and reporting to real-life experiences. Currently, Tebogo and her team are mentoring 13 mentees. “All we seek is a willingness to learn and a passion for sports,” she emphasises. Tebogo hopes to expand the programme in the coming years, reaching even more aspiring journalists.

Empowering Young Women in Sports Journalism

Tebogo is passionate about creating platforms that support young women in sports media. She believes it’s crucial for women to see themselves represented in the industry and hopes that Precious Sports Expressions will inspire more young women to pursue sports journalism. “It’s important for women to believe they belong here, despite it being a male-dominated space,” she asserts. By leading the way, Tebogo is paving a path for future female sports journalists to follow.

To Tebogo, more opportunities for women in sports media require greater inclusion at all levels—from production to executive roles. She’s noticed a positive shift, with more women entering sports broadcasting and sports photography. However, she emphasises that placing women in decision-making positions will accelerate this progress. “Having the right women in executive roles can help bridge the gender gap in sports media,” she adds.

For young women aiming to enter sports journalism, Tebogo’s advice is simple: “Start where you are, with what you have. You don’t need fancy equipment to start a blog or create content. Passion and consistency will get you far.” She encourages women to focus on their craft, rather than fame or money, and to remain dedicated to their work ethic. This approach, she believes, will set them up for long-term success.

In the next few years, Tebogo envisions herself as an established sports journalist and founder of a respected sports publication. She hopes to see Precious Sports Expressions evolve into a sports institution, possibly even an academy. Her vision includes partnerships with educational institutions, creating a robust pipeline of skilled sports journalists equipped with both practical and theoretical knowledge.

Tebogo’s long-term goal is for Precious Sports Expressions to become more than a blog or mentorship program. She wants it to be an institution where aspiring sports writers can hone their skills and gain the experience they need to enter the industry confidently. In her words, “Precious Sports Expressions will be a place where dreams are fulfilled and future sports journalists are born.”

Tebogo is determined to make a lasting impact on South African sports journalism. Through her mentorship program, she’s laying the foundation for the next generation of journalists, giving them a head start in a competitive industry. Her journey proves that even unconventional paths can lead to remarkable success, and she’s dedicated to helping others find their way.

For Tebogo, Precious Sports Expressions is not only a business but a legacy. By combining her love for education and sports, she’s creating a platform that will continue to influence and inspire long after she’s moved on to new ventures. Tebogo’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and purpose.
With her sights set on expanding Precious Sports Expressions and launching her own sports publication, Tebogo’s future in sports journalism looks bright. Her commitment to empowering others and advocating for women’s representation in sports media sets her apart. As she continues to grow, so will her influence in South African sports journalism, inspiring countless aspiring writers to pursue their dreams.
