Highlights from the 2024 World Athletics Awards in Monaco

The 2024 World Athletics Awards held in Monaco were a celebration of the incredible achievements of athletes from around the globe.

Olympic champions Sifan Hassan and Letsile Tebogo were named the overall World Athletes of the Year, marking the climax of an evening that honoured athletes across three categories: track, field, and out of stadium.

The ceremony saw a diverse group of athletes recognised for their groundbreaking performances in 2024.

Hassan, who was crowned the Women’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year, earned recognition for her stellar marathon performance and consistency throughout the year.

On the men’s side, Tamirat Tola, who claimed Olympic gold in the marathon with an Olympic record, received the Out of Stadium honour as well.

In the field categories, Mondo Duplantis and Yaroslava Mahuchikh were named Field Athletes of the Year. Duplantis had an extraordinary year, setting and revising his own pole vault world record three times, while Mahuchikh raised the world high jump record to 2.10m before securing Olympic gold.

Tebogo, a rising star in sprinting, was awarded Men’s Track Athlete of the Year after an unforgettable Olympic campaign. His victory in the 200m at the Paris Olympics was historic for Botswana, as he claimed the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in any sport. Tebogo’s African record of 19.46 seconds in the 200m was the fastest time of the year and placed him fifth on the all-time world list. He also made a significant impact in the 100m and as part of Botswana’s silver medal-winning 4x400m relay team.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Tebogo humbly expressed his surprise at the recognition, thanking the fans and acknowledging the support from his team and country.

The evening was also a celebration of the Rising Stars, with Sembo Almayew and Mattia Furlani being honoured for their impressive performances in 2024. These athletes represent the future of the sport, and their achievements give fans a glimpse into the next generation of stars.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised the athletes’ accomplishments, highlighting how they had set new benchmarks in athletic performance, achieving six world records and numerous Olympic and national records.

“This group of athletes represents the very best of our sport and has redefined what is possible in terms of athletic performance,” Coe remarked, acknowledging the extraordinary year for track and field athletics.

The 2024 World Athletics Awards not only highlighted the individual brilliance of athletes but also underscored the collective excellence of the sport.

With new records being set, Olympic titles won, and fans around the world cheering on these incredible talents, the awards served as a reminder of the heights that athletics continues to reach.
