Banyana Banyana Dominate Seychelles: A Commanding 8-1 Victory in COSAFA Championship

Banyana Banyana concluded their group stage matches at the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship with an exceptional 8-1 victory over Seychelles at Madibaz Stadium in Gqeberha on Monday, October 28. This dominant performance solidified South Africa’s perfect record in Group A, marking a successful start to the tournament. Coach Maud Khumalo’s squad emerged from the group stage unbeaten, with earlier wins against Namibia and Eswatini, tallying a total of 12 goals scored and only one conceded.

South Africa entered the match against Seychelles already assured of their spot in the semi-finals, having secured victories in their previous group games. Despite the advancement, Khumalo opted for continuity, retaining five players from the squad that had defeated Eswatini 3-0 in their previous match. From the onset, Banyana Banyana showcased their attacking strength, quickly establishing control of the game and demonstrating skillful dominance.

The first half was characterized by relentless South African pressure, with Kesha Hendricks emerging as a standout performer by scoring twice in the opening 45 minutes. Ntando Phahla, Tshegofatso Motlogelwa, and Sinamile Mkhwanazi each added to the scoreboard, sending South Africa into halftime with a commanding 5-0 lead. The efficient play and seamless teamwork from the hosts left Seychelles struggling to keep pace.

Coach Khumalo’s decision to keep a consistent lineup proved effective, as South Africa’s attacking prowess continued in the second half. Hendricks completed her hat-trick within minutes of the restart, capping off an impressive individual performance. The players maintained a high tempo, extending their lead with skillful finishes and well-timed passes that opened up opportunities to score.

South Africa’s control of the match underscored their depth and talent, as they continued to dominate possession and create chances. Seychelles had a difficult time challenging the South African defense, with Banyana Banyana maintaining their intensity and pressing forward for additional goals. Their cohesive playing style and confidence set the tone for what could be a promising path in the tournament.

In the closing stages of the game, South Africa conceded a rare penalty. Pascaline Moustache of Seychelles converted, scoring her country’s first goal of the tournament and marking a historic moment for the debutants. While it did little to affect the match outcome, Seychelles celebrated the goal, a memorable achievement in their COSAFA campaign despite the heavy defeat.

Banyana Banyana, however, were quick to refocus and wrapped up the game with their eighth goal, closing out a commanding performance. The victory not only highlighted South Africa’s offensive strength but also demonstrated their defensive solidity, having conceded only a single goal throughout the group stage.

This overwhelming win against Seychelles marks a confident close to the group stage for South Africa, as they now set their sights on the tournament’s knockout rounds. With 21 goals conceded across their three Group A matches, Seychelles faced considerable challenges but gained valuable experience from competing against high-level teams in the region.

For Coach Khumalo and her players, this win boosts morale as they prepare for the semi-finals, scheduled for Thursday, October 31, at 3 p.m. This tournament has showcased South Africa’s consistent and strategic play, which they will need to maintain as they face tougher opponents in the later stages.

The victory further emphasised South Africa’s role as one of the region’s strongest teams, as they strive to bring home the COSAFA Women’s Championship title. The positive performances so far reflect the depth of talent in the squad and the effectiveness of Khumalo’s leadership, as the team seeks to build on their momentum.

South Africa’s journey through the tournament has captivated fans, who are hopeful that Banyana Banyana will continue their winning streak. As they enter the semi-finals, expectations are high, with both players and supporters looking forward to what could be another successful chapter in South African women’s football.
