Introducing The Cape Town Tigers: A New Era in Basketball

In the heart of Mzansi, where aspirations blossom amidst the sprawling urban landscapes, there exists a profound passion for basketball, a passion that has long simmered beneath the surface, waiting for its moment to shine. For years, young boys and girls across the nation have harboured dreams of playing the game professionally, their hearts aflame with the same passion that ignites the courts of New York City or the streets of Chicago.

Yet, the journey to basketball stardom has often seemed like an impossible odyssey, with obstacles as towering as the skyscrapers that loom over the cityscape. For many, the dream of donning a professional jersey felt like a distant mirage, forever out of reach. But now, a new chapter unfolds. With the arrival of the Cape Town Tigers, South Africa’s first fully professional basketball team, the landscape of the sport is transformed. Led by Co-Captains Lebesa Selepe and Cartier Diarra, these trailblazers carry with them the hopes and dreams of an entire nation as they enter the court.

As the Basketball Africa League descends upon South African soil for the first time, all eyes turn to the Cape Town Tigers, the pioneers of a new era in South African basketball where every dribble is a heartbeat and every shot is a prayer.

“All eyes are on The Cape Town Tigers,” remarks Raphael Edwards, co-owner of the team. “it’s an honour to be playing this level of basketball in front of our fans. I want South African’s to know that we’re always going to play our hardest. We’re always going to give it everything we got and come out to win.”

South Africa may have a deep-rooted love for Rugby, Football, and Cricket, but the Cape Town Tigers are here to capture our hearts one win at a time. Cartier, with his infectious smile and New York flair, puts it best: “By seeing us win, everyone loves winners. We start off by winning the first game, and that’s all it takes to hook the fans. Our celebrations, our passion – it’s something everyone can relate to.”

As the final buzzer sounds, signaling the end of South Africa hosting The Basketball Africa League this season, the country will stand united in celebration, knowing that the dream of South African basketball is alive and thriving.

Cape Town Tigers star, Samkelo Cele encapsulates the sentiment perfectly: “When that final whistle blows I want South Africans to know that we’re super fierce, competitive and most of all we’re winners trying to put South African basketball on the map.”

And so, as the echoes of cheers and applause fill the air, let us remember that the in the hearts of the Cape Town Tigers, in the dreams of aspiring young players, and in the spirit of a nation united by its love for the game, the story of South African basketball is just beginning.
