Dr. Kaizer Motaung shared his journey at the South African Hall of Fame induction, revealing how he chose to pursue sports rather than a legal career against his parents’ wishes, ultimately founding the country’s largest sporting institution.

Motaung disclosed during the induction ceremony that despite his father’s wish for him to become a lawyer, he chose a different path. His journey led him from Soweto’s streets to the United States and back, ultimately becoming the leader of the most supported club in South African domestic football.

“I thank my parents, Ceyland and Manana Motaung, who did an incredible job of raising me and my siblings. My father would have preferred for me to be a lawyer. But I had my own desires and he understood. He fully supported me in my journey,” Motaung said in his speech at Montecasino. 

His parents were so supportive that they transformed their home into a makeshift clubhouse during the early days of Kaizer XI in 1969, later evolving into Chiefs in the following year.

“They welcomed everyone to their house in Phefeni (Soweto). We would have players coming in from as far as Durban and they would stay with us.”

At the age of 16, Motaung played for Orlando Pirates. He fondly recalled the day he was scouted for trials with Atlanta Chiefs in the United States, “I want to thank the fans who supported me when I had trials at Kilptown Stadium. Not many will remember that stadium. That led to my move to the USA. Those fans moved rocks and stones from the pitch and that paved my way to Atlanta.”

Expressing deep emotion, Motaung praised his wife, Juleka, acknowledging her significant role in his life, “She stood diligently by my side and has been part of this extraordinary journey. She has been there every step of the way. Credit to her because she reminds me of my mother as she has been the centre of the family. I would probably not have had the strength to navigate this life journey without her.” 

Motaung rightly receives recognition, and we continue to celebrate and honour his legacy for the impactful changes he brought to the football landscape in South Africa.
