Featuring a remarkable lineup including Sjava, Sun-El Musician, Msaki, Zakes Bantwini, Tresor, Zolani Mahola, Thakzin, Beatenberg, Simmy, MUZI, J’Something, Big Zulu and Jesse Clegg, the project reimagines Johnny Clegg’s timeless songs through the rich textures of Afro-house, soul, electronic music, folk, Afro-pop and contemporary African storytelling.

The project has been thoughtfully shaped through the creative partnership of Jesse Clegg and acclaimed singer-songwriter Msaki, who envisioned the album not as a memorial, but as a living continuation of Johnny Clegg’s artistic legacy.

“My father always believed that music could bring people together across cultures, languages and generations,” says Jesse Clegg. “These songs were never meant to stand still. Hearing this incredible group of artists reinterpret them with such honesty, creativity and respect has been deeply moving. It’s a reminder that great songs continue to evolve, finding new meaning in every generation that embraces them.”

For Msaki, the project became an opportunity to celebrate one of South Africa’s greatest musical catalogues while creating space for today’s artists to leave their own imprint.

“From the very beginning, Jesse and I wanted this project to feel less like a tribute and more like a conversation between generations of South African musicians,” she says. “Johnny’s music has always belonged to the people, and these artists have each brought their own voice, perspective and lived experience to these songs. It’s been a privilege to help create something that honours his legacy while allowing it to keep growing and inspiring new audiences.”
