Volkswagen’s Train 4 Life: Igniting Futures in Soweto

This year, Volkswagen’s Train 4 Life initiative has returned, and this time in the heart of Johannesburg, Soweto, on a journey of empowerment, education, and self-discovery. Now in its third year, the programme has become a beacon of hope, lighting the way for a new generation of South African women who are ready to take charge of their destinies.

For 2024, the focus is on the Diepkloof community, where girls from 10 local schools will benefit from a holistic programme that goes beyond the classroom. Spanning from July to September, Train 4 Life is more than just an initiative—it’s a movement. Volkswagen is determined to ensure these young women emerge as leaders, equipped with the life skills, confidence, and resilience to forge their own paths.

“At Volkswagen, we believe that the future belongs to those who dare to dream and act upon those dreams,” says Volkswagen South Africa representative. With Train 4 Life, we’re not just teaching skills; we’re nurturing the potential of these incredible young women to become the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.”

This year’s programme introduces a groundbreaking addition: a mentorship bursary program that promises to be a game-changer. Girls selected from the participating schools will receive ongoing mentorship from some of South Africa’s most inspiring figures, including Soweto-born stars Lerato Phago and Xoli Zondo. These women, who have risen to prominence from the very community they now serve, are proof that dreams are attainable, no matter where you start.

The initiative’s heart beats strongest on the soccer field, where the U15 girls’ tournament will run alongside the life skills sessions. Here, these young athletes will learn the power of teamwork, discipline, and ambition. The tournament’s final event on September 18 will not only crown a champion but also announce the mentees who will embark on a life-changing mentorship journey with icons like Phago, Zondo, and legendary sports figures Lucas Radebe and Desiree Ellis.

“Volkswagen is deeply committed to fostering growth and opportunity for young women in South Africa,” adds the Volkswagen representative. “We’re particularly excited about the new bursary and mentorship program because it allows us to support these girls in a more personal and impactful way. We’re investing in their futures, and by doing so, we’re investing in the future of South Africa.”

In a world where the road to success is often filled with obstacles, Volkswagen’s Train 4 Life initiative stands as a powerful reminder that with the right support, guidance, and opportunities, the possibilities are limitless. As Soweto prepares to witness the transformative power of this initiative, these young women are poised to shine, armed with the tools they need to navigate their futures with confidence and grace.

And so, a new chapter begins for these extraordinary girls—a chapter where they are the authors of their own stories, where they hold the pen, and where they write their futures, one empowered step at a time.
