Tymicah’s Debut Single ‘Forgetting You’ is all About Finding your Freedom

Driven by her desire to connect with her fans on a deeper level, Cape Town artist Tymicah is certain that her debut single “Forgetting You” will make waves as she prepares to release more music.

Her record aims to shed light on the ever-evolving sound of house music and to find liberation through dance. Tymicah hopes her listeners find joy, solace and reflect on the things they want to leave behind with the release of “Forgetting You.”

Speaking about her emotional connection to her music, Tymicah shares, “I make music out of necessity. I have one of those brains that makes me incredibly sad if I don’t.”

Strongly influenced by the South African house music scene, Tymicah has drawn inspiration from the music she listened to in her teenage years.

During the process of creating “Forgetting You,” Tymicah faced a number of challenges. “I wanted to make a good house track that was also vocally strong. However, having been removed from the creative scene for so long, I honestly had no musical network in Cape Town, as I had done music when I lived in Johannesburg many years ago. This was a huge challenge, but I had to go on an intense search for the perfect team of producers and visual artists who could help me execute what I had in mind.

The next couple of weeks were also spent exclusively playing house music to get myself into the mindset I needed, as I also had no prior experience with making house music. It became my entire life. For the demo, I didn’t have access to proper recording equipment, so I had to borrow my brother’s gaming headset and then sit in an empty cupboard (for acoustic purposes) for hours at a time over multiple days just recording. So yeah, the song took about 6 months from start to release and was met with challenges, but I loved every second of it.”

Tymicah shared her current emotions now that “Forgetting You” is available worldwide.

“It’s surreal. More than anything, I have just wanted to see people dance to it or cry for that matter. So to see an emotional connection with the song from my audience has been incredible.”

Paying homage to those who have come before her, Tymicah speaks fondly about the current state of house music in Cape Town. “The scene is absolutely booming! Our artists are incredible, and the house DJs that Cape Town keeps producing maintain the city’s pulse. It’s phenomenal here, really.”

Looking back on her journey, Tymicah has some advice for her younger self. “I’d tell her to get uncomfortable as often as she can, to bring fun into everything she does, to never lose her self-respect and to commit herself to chasing wisdom. I think that combination is all she’ll really need to maximise her youth.”

Currently, Tymicah is focusing on music and furthering her studies. “I’m really pouring my heart into two very important aspects of my life – my music and my studies. I’m committed to crafting music that moves people, while also continuing my educational journey. Completing my degree and sharing more content with the world are top priorities for me.”

As we conclude our interview, Tymicah is grateful for how far she has come and leaves words of hope for her fans. “You are loved and you are alive. Never, ever, deny the greatness that lies within you, and remember, it is your birthright to be your truest self.”

As “Forgetting You” resonates across the globe, it’s clear that Tymicah’s voice in the house music scene is not just heard but deeply felt. Her message is simple yet powerful: embrace your true self.
