#TravelTuesday: Wine Tasting Spots to Try!

South Africa has a rich wine-making history which spans over hundreds of years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that there are plenty of wine tours and tastings to serenade the palates of wine lovers. Often, a carefully curated wine-tasting experience provides more than just added knowledge on different kinds of wine, their history and how they can best be paired. Rather, one can also enjoy some mouth-watering cuisine, excellent service and sometimes even some breathtaking views. Here are just five of the best places to enjoy an unforgettable wine-tasting experience.

  1. De Grendel

De Grendel is nestled at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills and offers more than just fine wine. In fact, you’re in for breathtaking and unforgettable moments. An experience at the winery spoils you for views of Table Mountain, Lions Head and the clear blue sea. Only about 20 minutes from central Cape Town, De Grendel is truly nothing short of amazing. The winery’s tasting room is open 7 days a week (booking is essential) and wine tastings during the sunset are a gorgeous and highly recommended sight.

  1. Springfontein Wine Estate

If you’re searching for unconventional wines, Springfontein Wine Estate is your go-to. Just two hours away from Cape Town, the wine estate has an interesting array of collections to try. You are also able to enjoy a great meal or even have a picnic. To immerse yourself fully into the Springfontein experience, accommodation is available at the estate. This way, you can easily turn your wine-tasting excursion into an unforgettable little getaway.

  1. Cederberg Wines

Escape the city and head Northeast of Cape Town to experience a mini wine paradise.  Cederberg offers patrons the chance to experience award-winning wines from high-altitude vineyards. The winery also offers an extensive and informative sampling of its versatile range of wines. If you’re both a wine and beer lover, you’d be glad to know Cederberg Brewery offers some delicious beer too.

  1. The Tasting Room

The Tasting Room is situated in Waterkloof, Pretoria and offers a taste of the Cape wine lands in Gauteng. A different wine house is showcased every month and each glass can be enjoyed alongside a fantastic cheeseboard and some delicious tapas. The wine-tasting establishment also has other beverages available including beer, whiskey and tequila. So go ahead and invite that friend who isn’t necessarily a wine enthusiast.

  1. Siwela Wines

Siwela Wines is an award-winning black-owned winery which is aimed at producing wines of the highest quality and making them accessible to a majority of South Africans. Situated in Hartbeespoort, the winery offers great wine tastings and warm hospitality. You can learn more about the art of winemaking and also grow an understanding and appreciation for our country’s finest exports. Plus, there are private and personalized wine tastings to make any special occasion an unforgettable one.
