#TravelTuesday: Tourism Expo encourages travel and exploration!

The beauty of travelling lies in its ability to teach us through new experiences, while also broadening our horizons through unforgettable memories. Be that as it may, travelling is unfortunately still perceived—and sometimes rightfully so— as daunting and inaccessible by many. This is due to a number of factors including finances, necessary planning and even a lack of knowledge. This past weekend (29 Sept – 1 Oct), the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) in collaboration with Jakada Holdings hosted the 3rd annual Mpumalanga Tourism Expo at Riverside Mall in Mbombela.

The 3-day event was aimed at showcasing the beauty and travel opportunities which  Mpumalanga has to offer. It was also a chance for various tourism stakeholders from different provinces to interact, share knowledge of various tourism products and even inspire travel enthusiasts and potential jet-setters about the accessibility of travel, as well as the various possibilities that exist. Moreover, high school pupils studying Tourism as a subject had the chance to be exposed to the world of tourism beyond their textbooks.

Addressing the pupils, Mr Xolani Mthethwa, CEO of Jakada Holdings, emphasised the huge potential which lies within the tourism industry. He also referred to it as an industry which is more accommodative than most people may realise since the term ‘tourist’ does not only apply to those travelling internationally or to the far ends of South Africa. In fact, you can be a tourist in your neighbouring province or one of the cities not too far from where you reside. In such an instance, one would be referred to as a day visitor.

Indeed, there is plenty out there to explore and experience. Sometimes, your next best travel memory is not as far-fetched as you may think. If you are a travel enthusiast ready to be in their “tourist era’ but have no idea where to start, look no further. In the spirit of travel and exploration, here are some general must-tries for an informative, fun and unforgettable travel experience.

1. Adventures & Adrenaline

What’s a fun trip without a bit of adrenaline? Regardless of which destination you may choose, adventure is often worth the try. Activities such as paintballing, river rafting, quad biking and ziplining add an exciting and special element to your trip. A quick online search can direct you to such activities. Whether you are looking to visit an adventure venue near you, or hoping to squeeze one into your itinerary when travelling a little further away, you would be making exciting memories.

2. Nightlife

Only a few things are better than memories from the nights we will never forget. Throughout South Africa, each province has its own nightlife and social culture. In Mpumalanga, establishments such as Coyotes Lounge, The Prestige Lifestyle Grand and Trends are amongst the best places to be. When travelling, do your research on the best clubs and lounges in and around your chosen destination. Immersing yourself in the nightlife of a particular destination opens you up to a different party experience. We highly recommend good and responsible enjoyment!

3. Food and all things yummy…

Good food is the pretty bow which ties the perfect travel experience together. When you are out of your normal environment, this is the ideal time to try out new dishes and visit new and interesting eating establishments. So go ahead and explore, your new favourite restaurant awaits!

4. Historic and iconic sites

When it comes to iconic and historic sites, South Africa is not found wanting. In Mpumalanga, one can feast their eyes on a view from God’s Window or see the Big Five at the Kruger National Park. Likewise, the rest of Mzansi’s provinces have plenty to offer including the Western Cape’s Table Mountain and Gauteng’s Apartheid Museum. By visiting iconic and historic sites, one gets to learn more about South Africa and what sets us apart from the rest of the world.
