According to a 2016 study done at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, travelling as a family is highly beneficial and strengthens family bonds.

Choosing a destination that is family-friendly plays a vital part in the overall experience and memories made, especially for your young ones.

Whether you’re considering an international trip, or intend to keep it lekker and local for your next family holiday, here are some family-friendly destinations to consider.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali has a mix of beautiful beaches and culture. There are plenty of interesting things which the whole family can enjoy.

You can attend festivals, visit water parks or even hike through rice fields. There are also many family-friendly restaurants which serve delicious and relatively inexpensive food.

Most of Bali’s hotels are child-friendly, making the stay memorable and worthwhile for your young ones too. Apart from the gorgeous views, some refreshing activities such as fish feeding, local walks and yoga can also be enjoyed.

Crete, Greece

Crete is a destination with a lot to offer. We’re talking lovely climate, excellent food, great beaches and the chance to simply relax as you embrace slow living with your family.

The island has some superb hotels which are family-friendly. While the foodies in your family try out the delicious local cuisine, those who are beach babies can enjoy some water sports such as surfing. Moreover, those who simply seek relaxation and an immersion into the island life can relax on hammocks while gradually sipping their drink of choice.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a city so wonderful, it has something in store for each member of the family.

You can have a great time at the lively V&A Waterfront, visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, take the Table Mountain Cable Car or even go on a tour of Robben Island.

Learning about the history of our country and the late Nelson Mandela will be informative and interesting for your young ones. Plus, we think they’ll absolutely love the Table Mountain cable car ride!

Florence, Italy

There is so much for families to see and do in Florence, both indoors and outdoors. Therefore, you are sure to make memories of a lifetime. The whole family can enjoy Italian food, culture and the various attractions.

As you thoroughly tap into tourist mode and explore all the lovely attractions, excitement is bound to be in the air. With both young and old family members immersing themselves fully in the experience, it is sure to be a cherished and unforgettable holiday.

Mpumalanga, South Africa

Fondly known as ‘the place of the rising sun’, Mpumalanga is a fun and family-friendly destination. You can visit the Kruger National Park and experience animals in their natural habitat.

The province also has a number of exciting things to do including a water park, some quad biking, hiking and exploring various attractions such as God’s Window.

Shanghai, China

Although visiting Shanghai with children can be a bit controversial due to the large population and the destination’s ever-so-busy streets, it has some interesting activities in store. As such, making fond family memories is a possibility.

You can visit Shanghai Disneyland Park where your children can live out their Disney dreams, as well as the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium. Additionally, your family can tour the Old City – an experience that is both exciting and informative.
