Gospel music is a traditional genre of Christian music, and it could be considered to be one of the foundations of the Christian community. It is a prevalent genre worldwide and one of the best-selling genres in South Africa, with artists often getting gold and platinum sales. It is diverse and vibrant and it is an instrument for praise, worship, and religious expression.

The genre has also given us great gospel choirs like Joyous Celebration — an award-winning South African Gospel choir founded in 1996 — and has stolen the hearts of many South Africans because approximately 80% of South Africans are Christian. Gospel is known for its uplifting and harmonious music, with hits like Ndenzel’ Uncedo and Yesu Wena UnguMhlobo. The group does not only produce hit songs but has also been home to award-winning stars like Dr Rebecca Malope, Deborah Fraser and Benjamin Dube. Gospel music has also given us stars like Khaya Mthethwa, who is also known for being the first Black South African to win the South African Idols and his popular song Mkhulumsebenzi. Additionally, Hlengiwe Ntombela aka Hle, joined Joyous Celebration in 2016, and then later embarked on an exciting journey as a solo artist. And later won a South African Music Award (SAMA) for her debut album. She then reached the global scene and made history by being the first non-US artist to be signed to the American record label Mowtown Gospel.
