Peter Shalulile Equals Nomvethe’s All-Time PSL Scoring Record

Peter Shalulile cemented his legacy in South African football on Wednesday night when he equalled Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing Premier Soccer League goal-scoring record.

The Mamelodi Sundowns forward struck his 129th goal in South African domestic football during a 2–0 victory over Magesi FC in Polokwane, drawing level with Nomvethe at the summit of the all-time charts.

The Namibian’s milestone came in fitting fashion—clinical, composed, and decisive. After Jayden Adams had given Sundowns the lead in the second half, Shalulile delivered the killer blow with a curling finish from distance that not only sealed three points but also secured his place in PSL folklore.

Sundowns Run

Since arriving at Chloorkop in 2020, Shalulile has transformed into the heartbeat of the Brazilians’ attack. Of his 129 career goals in the PSL, an extraordinary 102 have come in Sundowns colours, with the other 27 netted during his time at Highlands Park.

His scoring touch has stretched across every competition:

90 in the league

14 in the Nedbank Cup

4 in the MTN8

2 in the League Cup (Betway Knockout)

19 in CAF competitions

That consistency has already earned him the honour of becoming Sundowns’ all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Daniel Mudau’s mark in 2023. Shalulile’s path to this moment has been decorated with personal accolades. He is a three-time Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot winner (2020–21, 2021–22, 2022–23)—the only player in PSL history to claim it three times. He has also been recognised as PSL Footballer of the Year and Footballer of the Season, cementing his dominance in the local game.

His exploits have not been limited to South Africa. In 2023, he walked away with the CAF Champions League Golden Boot, proving his pedigree on the continental stage. Following the match, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso expressed his admiration for Shalulile’s achievement. “When players achieve their own objectives and make history and as a team help them to get those achievements, we are proud and happy.”

Cardoso also emphasised the importance of Shalulile’s contributions to the team’s success. “It is important that Peter helps us to win matches and together with his teammates they did a wonderful job in this match.”

What Comes Next

With Sundowns still competing on multiple fronts, including the MTN8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates this coming weekend, Shalulile stands on the brink of history. His next strike will make him the outright all-time PSL top scorer, a feat that once seemed untouchable during Nomvethe’s reign.

For now, he shares the throne. But given his form, hunger, and relentless work rate, it feels inevitable that Peter Shalulile will soon sit alone as the greatest goalscorer in PSL history.
