Paris Fashion Week 2024: Embracing the New Romantics

As the world turned its attention to Paris for the spectacle of the Olympics, another grand event unfolded on the runways of the French capital: Paris Fashion Week. Amidst the glitz and glamour, a common theme emerged among the collections of the most illustrious designers—a celebration of the New Romantics.

Balmain: Olivier Rousteing set the stage with a collection that paid homage to his childhood home in Bordeaux. Through opulent textures and rich colours, Rousteing evoked the romantic spirit of the French countryside, infusing his designs with a sense of nostalgia and elegance.

Balenciaga: Demna Gvasalia continued the theme with a collection that explored the intersection of past and future. Against a backdrop of digital imagery, Gvasalia presented garments that blurred the boundaries between reality and fantasy, inviting viewers to reconsider their notions of beauty and identity in the digital age.

Saint Laurent: Anthony Vaccarello transported audiences to a world of seduction and allure with his boudoir-inspired collection. Through sheer fabrics and sensual silhouettes, Vaccarello captured the essence of romance, offering a modern take on classic femininity that exuded confidence and sophistication.

Off-White: Ib Kamara injected a sense of playfulness into the proceedings with his vibrant and eclectic collection. Drawing inspiration from the cultural crossroads of Japan and America, Kamara’s designs celebrated the joy of self-expression and individuality, inviting viewers to embrace their unique identities with boldness and flair.

Dior: Maria Grazia Chiuri paid homage to the revolutionary spirit of the 1960s with her ready-to-wear collection for Dior. Through sleek silhouettes and graphic prints, Chiuri captured the essence of a bygone era, channeling the spirit of rebellion and empowerment that defined the New Romantic movement.

Chloé: Making her debut at the helm of Chloé, Chemena Kamali presented a collection that embodied the label’s bohemian heritage with a contemporary twist. Through flowing silhouettes and romantic details, Kamali captured the free-spirited essence of the New Romantics, inviting viewers to embrace their inner wanderer and dreamer.

In a world marked by uncertainty and upheaval, the designers of Paris Fashion Week offered a glimpse of hope and optimism through their celebration of the New Romantics. Through their artistry and creativity, they reminded us of the transformative power of fashion to inspire, uplift, and unite us in our shared humanity.
