MI Cape Town delivered a commanding performance in Johannesburg to claim their maiden Betway SA20 title, dismantling two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs.
In a gripping final at DP World Wanderers, Cape Town’s rise from previous underperformers to dominant victors showcased their resilience and firepower.
The night belonged to Kagiso Rabada, who tore through the Sunrisers’ batting lineup with an electrifying 4/25. His early breakthrough set the tone, and his return spell ensured there was no way back for the defending champions, who crumbled to 105 all out in 18.4 overs.

New Zealand’s pace ace Trent Boult provided stellar support, finishing with 2/9, while George Linde (2/20) and Rashid Khan (1/19) applied further pressure.
Earlier, MI Cape Town set an imposing total of 181/8 in their 20 overs, fueled by a powerful display from Connor Esterhuizen (39 off 26 balls) and the explosive Dewald Brevis (38 off 18). The Sunrisers’ bowlers had moments of resistance, with Richard Gleeson (2/22) and Liam Dawson (2/40) picking up key wickets, but they couldn’t contain Cape Town’s aggressive batting approach.
For a franchise that finished bottom of the table in the first two seasons of SA20, this triumph marked a remarkable turnaround. Captain Rashid Khan expressed his elation, saying, “It feels unreal. From being at the bottom for two years to lifting the trophy—it’s just incredible. No words can describe how happy I am.”

Rabada, who thrives on playing in front of home crowds, emphasised the league’s significance: “This tournament is massive for South African cricket, especially for young players coming through. The fans love the energy, and we love putting on a show for them.”
Owned by the powerhouse Ambani family, who also oversee the Mumbai Indians empire, MI Cape Town has now added its name to the SA20 history books. With this title, they’ve shattered their underdog label and set a new standard for seasons to come.

From rock bottom to the summit—MI Cape Town’s journey has been nothing short of spectacular. And on this electric night in Johannesburg, they proved beyond doubt that champions are not just made; they are forged through perseverance and passion.
