In this exclusive interview with Nounouche, she shares her inspiring journey and her vision for her community and South Africa as a whole.

Breaking Barriers: A Historic Inauguration

On March 11th, 2023, history was made as Kgošigadi Clara Bontle Mashile was inaugurated as the first-ever female Paramount Chief in her lineage, marking the 8th leader in her family’s legacy. This occasion signifies not only a break from traditional gender roles but also a significant step towards gender equality. She explains, “Becoming the first-ever female Paramount Chief is a momentous occasion. It signifies a break from the traditional gender roles and demonstrates progress towards gender equality.”

For her community, this appointment brings the promise of a fresh perspective and innovative approaches to traditional leadership. As a female leader, Kgošigadi Mashile aims to inspire other women in her community and beyond, showing that leadership knows no gender boundaries. “Leadership should never be confined by gender,” she adds, highlighting the potential for addressing modern challenges more effectively through diverse leadership.

Balancing Tradition and Education

Juggling the responsibilities of a traditional leader and being a final-year law student is no small feat. Kgošigadi Mashile emphasises the importance of effective time management in her demanding schedule, “Juggling traditional leadership duties with law school can be demanding. Effective time management is crucial —as much as I’d love to make it seem glamorous it really is hard— Sometimes I consider delegating certain tasks within my family.” She also acknowledges the value of her legal studies in navigating the legal aspects of her role, ultimately contributing to the betterment of her community through legal knowledge.

Hopes for Community and South Africa

Kgošigadi Mashile has ambitious hopes for her community and South Africa as a whole. For her community, she envisions improved infrastructure, healthcare, and education. She firmly believes in equipping the younger generation with knowledge, as she states, “It is crucial to equip the mind with the necessary knowledge so that the next generation can embrace the endless opportunities the world has to offer.” Economic development projects and job opportunities are also on her agenda, aiming to empower community members while preserving cultural practices that define their uniqueness.

Her aspirations extend to the entire country, where she envisions reduced inequality, improved access to quality education and healthcare, and strengthened unity among diverse communities. Economic growth and stability, she believes, will contribute to a brighter future for all South Africans, including addressing pressing issues like the state-owned utility, Eskom.

Empowering Young South African Women

Kgošigadi Mashile has a message of empowerment for young South African women. She encourages them to be ambitious and resilient, emphasising the importance of education and self-belief. Her message is clear: “You can overcome any obstacles and make a significant impact in your communities and beyond.” She underscores the value of collaboration and supporting one another, not only as women but as young people in general.

Preserving Heritage in a Changing World

In a world that often leans towards Eurocentric influences, preserving heritage and cultural customs remains a priority for Kgošigadi Mashile. She suggests several ways to ensure that young people don’t lose their connection to their roots:

  • Education: Promote cultural education in schools and communities, encouraging the teaching of local languages, history, and traditions.
  • Cultural Events: Organise and participate in cultural events and festivals to keep traditions alive and share them with younger generations.
  • Integration: Find ways to integrate cultural values and practices into daily life without isolating them from the modern world, emphasising the relevance and adaptability of cultural customs.
  • More Participation: Involve diverse groups of people in cultural activities and decision-making processes. Listen to their perspectives and ideas on how to preserve and adapt traditions and the community.

In the face of a rapidly changing world, Kgošigadi Clara Bontle Mashile stands as a beacon of hope, balancing tradition and modernity, and inspiring the next generation to embrace their heritage while reaching for the stars. Her journey reminds us that it is possible to lead with grace and strength, breaking barriers, and shaping a brighter future for all.
