Keagan Buchanan: Football, Family and Fashion

South African Footballer Keagan Buchanan

Cape Town Spurs, established in 1970, rejoined South Africa’s top football division, the DSTV Premiership, after securing promotion last season. In their quest to compete at the highest level, the team sought a balance of youthful vigour and seasoned expertise.

On July 21, 2023, the Urban Warriors officially welcomed back a familiar face, Keagan Buchanan, to their roster. Keagan, who departed the club at the age of 15 to pursue his career at Bloemfontein Celtic, has since crafted a noteworthy career, making Capetonians proud.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Leaving his hometown was emotionally taxing for Keagan, who, at the time, only knew the beauty of Cape Town. However, he credits his family’s unwavering support for helping him navigate those early difficulties. Now, after 14 years, Keagan has the chance to play for Cape Town in the top tier of South African football.

In this in-depth interview, Keagan shares insights into his football career, growth, and plans for the future.

Daniel Young: What do you enjoy the most about football?

Keagan Buchanan: Match day is the pinnacle for me. It’s when you get to shine, play in front of supporters and family—the moment you prepare the whole week for.

DY: How do you prepare for a game?

KB: I believe in staying relaxed. Whatever relaxes me, whether it’s talking to my wife, watching TV, or playing PlayStation. I don’t overthink it; I do what makes me feel calm.

DY: Has your preparation changed over the years as you’ve progressed in your career?

KB: As you mature, priorities change. When you’re younger, you’re more mischievous. Now, being married my approach is different.

DY: Talk to me about your professional debut…

KB: Making my debut for Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012 or 2013 was a dream come true. Leaving Cape Town at 15 was tough, but it helped me grow into the person I am today.

DY: Was it difficult to leave home?

KB: Leaving at 15 was challenging, but it was good for me. I learned to do things for myself and grew into a man. This is the first time I’m playing for a top-flight team in Cape Town since leaving, 14 years later.

DY: How would you describe the difference in football philosophy between Johannesburg and Cape Town?

KB: The passion for football is the same, but the lifestyle is different. Johannesburg is busier, while Cape Town is more peaceful and scenic.

DY: The Bayhill Tournament is significant for many aspiring footballers. Have you played in it?

KB: I played in it twice, and while it’s a big opportunity for kids, priorities change as you progress to senior football.

DY: What was your most favourite goal?

KB: Scoring from a corner against Stellenbosch last season was special. I used the wind to my advantage.

DY: Who was the most difficult opponent you played against?

KB: Toughest opponents are those who control the game. Players like Teko Modise and Miguel Timm stand out.

DY: Growing up, who inspired you?

KB: Benni McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Quentin Fortune, and Steven Pienaar were my inspirations. Playing under legends like Benni and Shaun is an honour.

DY: When you hang up your boots, what’s the plan?

KB: I plan to open a creative agency and launch a clothing brand soon. Being at home allows me to work on these passions in my spare time.

DY: Can you explain more about the clothing brand?

KB: The first capsule drops next year, and it’s been a project in the making for three years. I want to do it right—research what works abroad and bring something unique to South Africa.

DY: Are you excited to become a father?

KB: I’m super excited. Fatherhood will fit into my schedule, and being at home is a blessing.

DY: What is something you would tell your younger self?

KB: I have no regrets. Everything happened for a reason, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without those experiences.

DY: How important is discipline in a footballer’s life?

KB: Very important. Lifestyle choices can affect longevity in a football career.

DY: What is something you had to overcome in your footballing career?

KB: Injuries were setbacks, but they made me stronger. Prayer, faith, and discipline got me through.

DY: How do you deal with setbacks, especially injuries?

KB: Prayer, faith, and mental strength are crucial. Trusting the process and staying focused are essential for a successful comeback.

Keagan’s journey from Cape Town to various clubs and back is a testament to his resilience and commitment to both football and personal growth. As he embraces his chapter with Cape Town Spurs, the footballer looks forward to making his mark and building a legacy beyond the pitch.
