#ICYMI: A Weekend Of Big Shifts In SA Sport!

Sports enthusiasts had a plethora of options to indulge in this weekend, as the South African sports scene was ablaze with action ranging from rugby to football.

Now, let’s take a look back at the highlights:

Bulls serge to 40-22 derby win over Stormers

The DHL Stormers’ loss in Pretoria caused them to fall from fifth to ninth in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship standings, placing them currently outside of the qualification spots for the Investec Champions Cup and the playoffs in the Vodacom URC. On the other hand, the Vodacom Bulls benefitted from their five-point victory over their arch-rivals.

The Stormers shouldn’t despair over their drop to ninth place; they are only four points behind fourth-placed Edinburgh, who happen to be their next opponents. The upcoming game will take place in Cape Town, where John Dobson’s team has a strong record, having been defeated only by Munster (twice) and the Emirates Lions since hosting their first match in the Vodacom URC in December 2021.

The Brazilians top CAF Group A

Mamelodi Sundowns continued to shine in the African sporting arena with a 1-0 win over five-time continental champions TP Mazembe in the final CAF Champions League Group A match on Saturday, March 2nd.

Peter Shalulile secured victory from the penalty spot, ensuring maximum points for the Brazilians and solidifying their position at the top of the group. Despite already qualifying for the quarter-final round heading into the Mazembe encounter, the final match was crucial for determining the group winner.

Spurs on a winning streak!

In football news, Cape Town Spurs are making waves with their recent 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy. This win marks their second consecutive triumph in the Premier Soccer League, following a 3-1 victory over AmaZulu on February 17th. Despite being positioned at the bottom of the league table in 16th place, the Urban Warriors are now under pressure to maintain their positive momentum. Their back-to-back wins offer a glimmer of hope as they prepare to face Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, March 6th.

HWBSL returns to action

The local Hollywoodbets Super League resumed action over the weekend, with reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies securing a victorious start by defeating Royal AM 4-0. Other matches saw Copperbelt Ladies draw 2-2 against University of Western Cape, Durban Ladies clinch a 2-0 victory over University of Pretoria, Lindelani Ladies secure a 3-0 win against Thunderbirds, and TS Galaxy triumph with a 2-0 win over JVW FC. Additionally, Richmond United drew 2-2 with City Ladies, and Fort Hare claimed a 2-1 victory over TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies in the remaining fixtures.

In other significant news from earlier last week, Banyana Banyana secured a 1-0 victory over Tanzania (4-0 on aggregate) to progress to the final round of Olympic qualifiers. The South African team will now face Nigeria with the aim of earning a berth at this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
