South Africa’s premier T20 competition, the Betway SA20, is back for its third season, starting Thursday, 9 January 2025.

Over the next four weeks, cricket fans will witness the next generation of South African talent stepping up to the crease alongside some of the biggest names in the cricketing world.

Established in 2022, the SA20 has quickly gained a reputation as the proving ground for rising stars. With a format akin to the IPL and Big Bash, the league has revolutionized T20 cricket in South Africa. It offers a stage for young cricketers to learn from international superstars, gain valuable experience, and showcase their skills under the brightest lights.

One of the standout features of the Betway SA20 is its dedication to nurturing young talent. Introduced in Season 2, the Rookie Draft has already made a significant impact, with five of the six rookies selected last season earning a place in Season 3 squads.

The league also introduced the prestigious Betway SA20 Rising Star Award, which recognizes players under 25 who deliver standout performances. Pretoria Capitals’ all-rounder Eathan Bosch claimed the inaugural honor in 2023, followed by Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Marco Jansen in 2024.

AB de Villiers’ Ones to Watch

Betway SA20 ambassador and cricket legend AB de Villiers is already eyeing potential breakout stars for this season. Among them is Bryce Parsons, a left-handed batter for the Durban’s Super Giants. Known for his ability to hit the ball with immense power, Parsons has drawn comparisons to South Africa’s own David Miller.

“When Bryce gets going, it’s thrilling to watch,” said De Villiers, who also highlighted Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Jordan Hermann as a player to keep an eye on.

The SA20 features six teams, all owned by IPL franchises:

Pretoria Capitals

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The tournament begins with a marquee clash between two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town in Gqeberha. Each team will play the others twice in the group stage, with the top four advancing to the playoffs.
