Season 2 of the Betway SA20 League wrapped up on Saturday, February 10th, marking the end of 34 thrilling cricket matches and leaving behind countless unforgettable moments. From the scenic fields of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, to Western Cape, the league illuminated the cricketing scene, imprinting lasting memories for players and fans alike.
To grasp the essence of this remarkable league, it’s essential to trace its roots. In November 2022, SA20 commissioner and former Proteas captain, Graeme Smith, inaugurated the league with the primary goal of reigniting the excitement and entertainment associated with South African cricket.
And indeed, those objectives were met with resounding success. Personally involved in this extraordinary endeavour, I witnessed sold-out venues across the provinces, children revelling in the experience, and adults not only enjoying the sport but also relishing the camaraderie of being outdoors. This competition has truly become a family affair, drawing many closer to the beloved game of cricket.
In addition to providing entertainment, the league also served as a platform for broadcasting talents to showcase their anchoring skills in the cricketing realm. During the tournament, notable figures from the football world such as Julia Stuart and Melissa Reddy, as well as rugby personality Motshidisi Mohono, made appearances, leaving their mark in the cricketing space. One thing is evident: the SA20 League is inclusive and welcomes talent from all backgrounds!
Furthermore, it was delightful to witness content creators such as Zenande Funani, Nqobile Khwezi, and Twiggy Moli showcasing their talents on the field. Hats off to the organisers for presenting us with an exceptional league that is poised for continued growth and for providing women with a platform where their remarkable contributions to the sporting world are truly valued!
