Amiri Prize Winner: Lukhanyo Mdingi

From the modest community of East London to the global stage, Lukhanyo Mdingi has emerged victorious, winning the prestigious 2023 Amiri Prize. Hailing from South Africa, Mdingi’s success story reflects his creative prowess and his dedication to fostering local talent and contributing to the broader fashion narrative.

Originally drawn to the world of fashion, Mdingi relocated to Cape Town to pursue his passion at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. His early breakthrough came as a finalist in the Elle Rising Star Design Awards, propelling him into the spotlight of the local fashion scene. Soon after, he earned a coveted spot on Design Indaba’s esteemed Emerging Creatives platform, solidifying his position as a rising star in the industry.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped his journey, Mdingi stated, “We look forward to gaining the guidance needed to continually grow our independent business and vision.” His commitment to growth and innovation has now been recognized internationally, as the jury awarded him the 2023 Amiri Prize, a prestigious accolade with a $100,000 prize and an extended mentorship program.

Amiri, the founder of the prize, highlighted the exceptional talent of this year’s participants, noting the difficulty in choosing a winner. However, Mdingi’s unique vision and approach set him apart. “The current year’s ability was extraordinary, and it was challenging to choose a leader, yet Lukhanyo’s vision and approach stood apart to us all,” Amiri said. “His new assortments have seen him calibrate a particular tasteful and reasonableness, however similarly as estimable is the reason behind what he does — for his more extensive local area and culture — and this reverberates with serious brand potential.”

Establishing his eponymous fashion brand in 2015 in Cape Town, Mdingi aimed to uplift the work of local artisans. His designs often showcase clear diversity narratives and sophisticated creations, with each season building upon a wardrobe of bold statement pieces. For his Spring 2023 collection, presented in Paris, Mdingi drew inspiration from the street style and art of Burkina Faso, where many of his garments are crafted.

Renowned American footwear designer Salehe Bembury, part of the Amiri Prize jury, praised Mdingi as a skilled artist whose collections are both playful and sophisticated. The Spring 2023 collection reflects Mdingi’s ability to weave together diverse materials and inspirations, creating a visual tapestry that resonates with global audiences.

The Amiri Prize, established in 2021 to support emerging fashion creatives, witnessed its inaugural winner, Lou Badger, from Philadelphia. After a hiatus in the previous year, the competition returned in 2023 with an expanded scope, welcoming international designers. Among the eight other finalists were talents from France, Iran, Nigeria, the U.S., and China, highlighting the global reach and impact of the prestigious fashion award.
