TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo has etched its name in African women’s football history by clinching the CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024 title.
The team claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts and former champions AS FAR in a thrilling final at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida.
This marks Mazembe’s first continental triumph and serves as redemption for their group stage exit in the 2022 edition. TP Mazembe’s journey to the title was marked by unwavering determination and tactical brilliance.
Emerging from a competitive group stage, they demonstrated resilience and a winning mentality that carried them through the knockout phases. Each game showcased their ability to adapt and overcome challenges, including defeating formidable opponents en route to the final.
Their victory is not only a testament to their growth as a team but also a reflection of the increasing quality and competitiveness of African women’s club football. The decisive moment of the match came early, as Marlene Kasaj converted a penalty within the opening 10 minutes.
From that point on, Mazembe displayed remarkable composure and defensive discipline, thwarting every attempt by AS FAR to equalize. Despite playing in front of a supportive home crowd, the Moroccan side struggled to penetrate Mazembe’s resilient backline.
Mazembe’s approach in the second half was unexpectedly aggressive, with the team pushing forward to secure a second goal. Though AS FAR regained some control late in the game, Mazembe’s defense held firm, ensuring a historic win. Their determination throughout the tournament culminated in lifting Africa’s most prestigious women’s club football trophy.
In addition to the championship glory, TP Mazembe earned $600,000 in prize money, while AS FAR, the runners-up, took home $400,000.
Beyond the team accolades, the competition also celebrated individual brilliance:
Sanaa Mssoudy (AS FAR): Best Player of the Tournament
The dynamic playmaker was instrumental in AS FAR’s journey to the final. Scoring twice and contributing several assists, Mssoudy’s ability to dictate play and launch attacks earned her the tournament’s top individual honor.
Doha El Madani (AS FAR): Top Goalscorer
At just 19, El Madani emerged as the leading scorer with six goals. Her exceptional positioning and clinical finishing showcased her as a rising star in African women’s football.
Habiba Emad (FC Masar): Best Goalkeeper
Despite FC Masar’s early exit, Emad’s performances stood out. Her consistent shot-stopping ability and calmness under pressure secured her the tournament’s best goalkeeper award.
FC Masar: Fair Play Award
Recognised for their discipline and sportsmanship, the Egyptian club embodied the values of respect and integrity throughout the competition.
