Edward Enninful was appointed to be the fashion director of i-D– a British fashion magazine when he was 18 years old, making him the youngest person to ever be a fashion director for an international publication. He later went on to become a contributing editor for Italian Vogue in 1998, where he continued to grow as a stylist. In 2006, he became the contributing fashion editor for American Vogue. In 2011 he was appointed as the style director for W Magazine and he was then appointed as the British Vogue editor-in-chief in 2017, making him the first Black editor-in-chief of the magazine.
Edward Enninful has made significant contributions to the fashion industry through the publications he has been with. One of his notable contributions was spearheading the production of the 2008 Italian Vogue “Black Issue”. The “Black Issue” exclusively featured Black models including Naomi Campbell, Sessilee Lopez, Liya Kebede, and about 100 more Black models. The purpose of the issue was to acknowledge and honour Black women in the art, fashion, politics, and entertainment industry. In addition to the “Black Issue”, Enninful also styled the publication’s June 2011 cover editorial titled “Belle Vere”, which was a dedicated feature of plus-sized models like Candice Huffine, Tara Lynn, Robyn Lawley, and more.
When he was appointed as editor-in-chief of British Vogue in 2017, he continued to make significant contributions. His first issue as the publication’s editor-in-chief featured a British mixed-race model and feminist activist Adwoa Aboah as the cover star. He also collaborated with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex who guest-edited the 2019 September issue on the 15 female changemakers, the cover stars included the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Greta Thunberg — who, at 16, was one of the magazine’s youngest ever cover stars— Laverne Cox- who became the first trans person to feature on the cover of British Vogue, and 12 more changemakers.
In response to the “refugee ban” comments made by the former United States president, Donald Trump in 2017, Enninful created the moving video project “I Am An Immigrant”, in his capacity as the W’s creative and fashion director. Rallying industry icons such as Winnie Harlow, Imaan Hammam, and more to exhibit the vital creative contributions of people who are immigrants in the US.
