Burna Boy’s Return To South Africa

This past weekend, thousands of foodies and music lovers gathered at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for the DSTV Delicious Food and Music Festival. The two-day entertainment and culinary experience returned after a two year hiatus as a result of the pandemic.

Back with a bang, an amazing line-up which included Kwaito legends Thebe, Trompies, international DJs Major League as well as Simphiwe Dana, was headlined by Grammy award-winning superstar Burna Boy.

Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy returned to South Africa after seven years for the Saturday show which saw over twenty thousand people filling up the venue. Amid complaints on poor management of the event, long queues, no water stations, insufficient tags, not much food and
the VIP section being messier than general admission, Burna Boy saved the day.

The superstar performed all the crowd’s favourites including ‘Jerusalema’, ‘Sponono’ and ‘All Eyes on Me’ – hits which he has co-created with South African acts. Fans were hoping he would also bring out Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a group of Grammy-winning kings whom he featured in his latest album Love, Damini.

The dreadlocked superstar was in his element and his energy was unmatched. Wearing black Prada pants and white socks, he set the stage on fire. From ‘Yawa Dey’ to ‘Angelina’, ‘Gbona’ and ‘Ye’, he kept the hits coming and ultimately bid farewell with ‘Last Last’.

Even before the fame, the world of music was never unfamiliar territory for Burna Boy. This is as his grandfather, Benson Idonije, used to manage popular Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Burna Boy rose to fame in 2012 when he released ‘Like To Party’ – a single from his debut album L.I.F.E. Since then, the star has grown into an award-winning and internationally acclaimed brand.
